Harpenden Choral Society
Saturday 21st March at 7.30 pm
High Street Methodist Church, Harpenden AL5 2RU
VIVALDI: GLORIA
MOZART: EXSULTATE JUBILATE
HANDEL: CORONATION ANTHEMS
Conducted by Musical Director John Andrews with the King’s Sinfonietta and soloists Susanna Fairbairn and Joanna Harries.
Harpenden Choral Society is delighted to present a concert featuring three masterpieces of the Baroque and Classical eras, united by their spirit of praise and celebration. Vivaldi’s Gloria is one of his best-loved works, full of contrast and colour. Mozart’s Exsultate Jubilate shows Mozart at his most lyrical and elegant, building to the dazzling final Alleluia. Handel’s Coronation Anthems are music of great grandeur and ceremony. Handel wrote these anthems at speed, but their impact has proved remarkably lasting. Zadok the Priest has been performed at every British coronation since 1727 and remains remarkable for its dramatic impact.
This season marks the Harpenden Choral Society’s 50th Anniversary. The choir has gone from strength to strength in the last 50 years performing a wide range of works from all periods to audiences in Harpenden and the local area. The final concert of the season will be on Saturday 20th June with a programme of Puccini’s Missa di Gloria and Rutter’s Magnificat in St John’s Church, Harpenden. We hope you can join us at one or both of these forthcoming concerts as we celebrate this significant milestone.
