Harpenden Choral Society is delighted to present the opening concert of the season featuring Bach’s Mass in B Minor. The concert will be conducted by the choir’s Musical Director, John Andrews with Soprano soloists Lucy Farrimond and Susanna Fairburn, Alto Olivia Ray, Tenor Robert Forrest and Bass Tim Nelson with accompaniment by the King’s Sinfonietta Orchestra.

Bach's Mass in B minor is often hailed as one of the greatest musical achievements of all time. Written towards the end of his life, it is a monumental work that encapsulates the composer's genius in a way that few other pieces can match.

The B Minor Mass showcases Bach's unparalleled mastery of counterpoint, harmony, and orchestration. It is a technical marvel rooted in the Catholic Mass, but which transcends religious boundaries. It is filled with moments of melodic beauty, soaring choruses, and intimate passages for the soloists. Bach incorporates a wide range of musical styles and textures, from the majestic to the intimate. He creates a rich and varied listening experience which is a testament to the power of music to inspire and uplift. It is a reminder of the incredible heights that human creativity can reach.

Formed in 1975, Harpenden Choral Society has an established reputation for high quality performances to audiences in Harpenden and the local area, singing works from all periods. With currently around 75 members, the society is fortunate to have John Andrews as its Musical Director and Vivien Powles as its Rehearsal Accompanist.
