Hertfordshire town champions rare chalk stream, one of the world's rarest Habitats

Batford Springs Local Nature Reserve in Harpenden, Hertfordshire has long been a locally treasured green space but, with the development of an ambitious Management Plan, Harpenden Town Council is focused on maintaining and enhancing this outstanding area as a hugely important national asset. The Reserve, which contains a rare chalk steam, is an integral part of the River Lea ecological corridor and provides the opportunity for wildlife to thrive in a diverse and unique environment.

The Town Council’s Management Plan, which has been agreed for 2024-2027, aims to ensure that Batford Springs Nature Reserve’s importance to biodiversity and wildlife is maintained and enhanced while conserving its historical aspects. Additionally, the Plan highlights the Council’s commitment to establishing and sustaining ecological links with adjacent green spaces and its work to ensure that this scenic, open space also provides a safe, accessible and welcoming area to visitors.
