community bus, harpenden hopper, celebrates 10 years of connecting the community
For ten years, the “Harpenden Hopper” community minibus service has been a vital part of the local community, offering a reliable, low-cost hail and ride service around Harpenden. Its route covers areas not reached by commercial bus companies therefore the service is an important one to residents who would otherwise be unable to easily get around. Uniquely, the Harpenden Hopper isn’t just a transport provision; this inclusive service seeks to help combat loneliness, whilst also reducing congestion and pollution.
To commemorate a decade of service to residents, a special anniversary celebration was held at Harpenden Park Hall on Friday 3 July. The event was attended by The Mayor of Harpenden Cllr Kirsti Wenn, Andy Buchanan Chair and Founder of the Harpenden Hopper, Dr John Howie DL, Victoria Collins MP, and Harpenden Hoppers volunteers and supporters. Guests were treated to special Harpenden Hopper cupcakes and had the opportunity to look back at the Hopper's journey, share memories, and recognise the contribution of those who have supported the service throughout its first decade.
Cllr Kirsti Wenn, Mayor of Harpenden, said: “Since its launch in 2016, Harpenden Town Council has supported the Harpenden Hopper which has become a valued part of community life, helping residents travel around the town, accessing essential services, attending social activities, and remaining connected with friends and neighbours. Thank you to everyone involved in this crucial service which has played such an important role in supporting mobility, independence, and inclusion for people of all ages. It is a pleasure to take part in this much-deserved celebration.”
Andy Buchanan, Founder & Chair of the Harpenden Hopper said: “Today marks a very special milestone – the 10th Anniversary of the Harpenden Hopper. Ten years ago, a small group of local people came together with a simple vision: to provide a transport service that would help keep our community connected. What started as an idea has grown into a valued community asset, helping thousands of residents get to the shops, appointments, social activities, and stay connected with friends and neighbours. As one of the founders and now Chair of the Harpenden Hopper, I am incredibly proud of what has been achieved. None of it would have been possible without the dedication of our volunteer drivers, trustees, supporters, passengers, and the wider Harpenden community who have championed the Hopper over the years.
“The Hopper has always been about more than transport. It is about reducing isolation, supporting independence, and strengthening the sense of community that makes Harpenden such a special place.”
Competition for Children to name a new bus
Current Harpenden Hopper minibuses named "Harold” and “Holly” have serviced the Harpenden Community since 2018. With Holly’s retirement this year, Harpenden Town Council has purchased a new vehicle which will be in full service this summer. Harpenden’s children aged 11 and under are being asked to suggest names for the new bus, together with pictures of the new Hopper.
Further information about the competition can be found here.
