notice of casual vacancy

We can confirm that Brian Ellis (Harpenden South ward) resigned from his role as a Town Councillor on Saturday 15 March 2025.

This now means that the Town Council has a third casual vacancy following the two other resignations last week. A Notice of Vacancy for the South ward has been published on our website and in Town noticeboards.

If by 4 April 2025 a request for an election to fill the said vacancy is made in writing to The Proper Officer, St Albans City and District Council, Civic Centre, St Peters Street, St Albans AL1 3JE, signed by TEN electors in the South ward, an election will be held to fill the said vacancy.

If ten electors write to the Proper Officer by the 20 March, it is likely that the by-election would take place alongside the Hertfordshire County Council election on 1 May 2025. If they are received after the 20 March, the by-election cannot take place on the same date as the Hertfordshire County Council election and instead would be after this date but within 60 working days of the Notice of vacancy.

If an election is not requested by ten electors, the vacancy will be filled by Harpenden Town Council by co-option in accordance with the Local Elections (Parishes & Communities) Rules 2006.
