Walking, Cycling & Sustainable Local travel

The next time you're making a local journey in Harpenden or the surrounding area, why not leave the car at home and choose a healthier, greener way to travel? Whether you walk, cycle or take the bus, choosing an alternative to the car can help you stay active, reduce pollution, save money and make the most of your local area.

Cycling provides a practical alternative to the car for many local journeys, particularly for trips that are too far to walk but relatively short by road. For some journeys, cycling can also offer a convenient and reliable alternative to travelling by car, particularly during periods of congestion.

Walking is an accessible and low-cost form of active travel and can be incorporated into many everyday journeys. Choosing to walk for shorter trips can provide regular physical activity while reducing reliance on private vehicles.

Bus services provide an important alternative to private car travel, particularly for longer journeys and journeys to surrounding communities. Harpenden is served by bus routes connecting the town with surrounding villages and destinations. For example, Wheathampstead can be reached by bus in approximately 16 minutes, while regular services also connect Harpenden with Redbourn.

Walking, cycling and public transport each have an important role to play in creating a more sustainable local transport network. Not every journey can be made without a car and individual needs will vary. However, for your next local journey, consider whether a more sustainable option could provide a practical alternative to travelling by car.
